ShelterBox was started as a millennium project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall and has grown into the largest Rotary Club project in the world, with affiliates across the globe.
ShelterBox and Rotary are project partners in disaster relief, providing an instant response to help thousands of people following disasters such as severe flooding or earthquakes, or conflict crises in countries such as Ukraine or Syria. In 2022 over 400,000 people affected by earthquake, flooding, conflict, drought and weather disasters were supported.
The traditional green box took up space and when it came to customs checks at borders around the world, there were occasional problems. Now, the monies donated to Shelterbox are spent directly with the manufacturers of the products that were originally put in each box. These products are then stored on pallets at strategically placed locations around the world ready to be sent directly to where they are needed most. This is proving to be much more efficient and cost effective.
