A fantastic International Project by Symington Rotakids this year involving the whole school and supported by Prestwick Rotary.
Symington Primary School Rotakids picked collecting school books as their International Project this year. Through Prestwick Rotary, they contacted local Prestwick residents, Jean and Douglas Inness who work with educational charities in both the Philippines and Uganda with some of the poorest neighborhoods in these countries. It was great the link with local Prestwick community members.
The project concept was to collect children’s books to be sent by Jean and Douglas to specific schools they work with in the Philippines.
Results:
• The Rotakids had a formal launch of the project at a full school assembly where each Rotakid took a part in telling the pupils about the Philippines and the project. They then introduced Douglas and Jean Inness to the school
• The Publicity Officers phoned the local media outlets to promote the project
• The school collected an amazing 4125 children’s books and school resources during the period January to April 2019. These went out to the Philippines at the end of May. What a result by the pupils.
• The collections were collected through the school’s ‘House System’ with the ‘Houses’ winning points for the books collected. They thus integrated it into other school programmes.
• In addition, the Rotakids hosted and assisted in a visit to the school by the Ugandan Director of the Educational Charity in that country, showing a great interest in the needs of children there.
Prestwick Rotary President Edith Sterrick said: ‘It’s a joy to work with Symington Rotakids. They work so hard on all their projects and are committed to improving the lives of others’
Link Up Coordinator Douglas Inness said: ‘These books, provided by Symington Rotakids, will help create a new library in a Philippines school, having a wonderful impact on the children’s lives. In the Philippines the children love their library and spend every moment they can there. A fantastic recycling activity too.’
