Club Meeting — Saving Helensburgh Pier

Tue, Mar 19th 2019 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Elizabeth Talbot arranged for Bill Purdon to speak about the campaign to restore the burgh pier to use, and Alastair Wilson gave the vote of thanks.

President Mike Jane welcomed 14 other members, incoming members Clive and Gail Horton, and speaker Bill Purdon.

President-Elect Douglas Dow reported that arrangements were in place for the Bridge Night on Friday at Helensburgh Rugby Club in aid of Mercy Ships. Ten tables have been taken.

Mike Jane reported that there were already 40 entries for the Young Photographer competition, with the Lomond School entries still to come. He said that the Rotary front door plaque had now been refurbished, and he had passed it to Reay Mackay to arrange for it to be placed outside the Yacht Club main door.

The president then inducted Clive and Gail Horton to membership of the club and of Rotary International. Both professional photographers, they are the first married couple to be members of the club. Clive will serve on the Community Service committee, and Gail on the International Service committee.

The guest speaker, arranged by Liz Talbot, was Bill Purdon of the Helensburgh Seafront Development Project, who spoke about the history of Helensburgh pier from when it was constructed in 1850 to the present day, when it is not in use for safety reasons. He described the current campaign to have the pier repaired and restored for commercial use for the town's benefit. Alastair Wilson propsed the vote of thanks.

The weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was won by Bill Jones.
