Club Meeting — Gwen Gilmour

Tue, Dec 19th 2017 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Bill Deans arranged for Gwen Gilmour, head teacher of Helensburgh's Parklands School, to update the club on progress at the school. John McCormick proposed the vote of thanks.

President-elect Mike Jane welcomed fifteen other members and the guest speaker, Gwen Gilmour, head teacher of Helensburgh's Parklands School for the past six years.

Alastair Wilson announced that the smoked salmon and trout organised under the annual Mid-Argyll Rotary Club End Polio Now Christmas sales project had arrived and were available for collection after the lunch.

Mike Jane said that the ticket price for the joint Burns Night with the Helensburgh Garelochside club on Monday January 29 at the Rosslea Hall Hotel, Rhu, had been set at £25, but the starting time is not yet known.

Gwen Gilmour spoke about the changes and progress made at Parklands  — a purpose-built school for children with additional support needs —in recent years. The teaching staff had increased from eight to 21, and the number of pupils continued to increase. The aim is that when the pupils leave they have an understanding of IT and are able to undertake as much in life as possible.

On receipt of a request from the School Parent Council to the club's community and vocational committee earlier in the year, the Board agreed to donate £562 to purchase two specialised laptops — further cementing the relationship between the club and the school.

The vote of thanks was proposed by John McCormick, and the weekly raffle for a whisky miniature was won by Lesley Kennedy.
