Greenock Arts Guild

Elliot McKelvie, John Phillips and Brian Gavin, all directors of the Arts Guild Greenock gave a presentation on the development of the new Arts Center to be built on the site of Lamont's Dry Dock. The dock is to be partially filled to allow the siting of the new center leaving about 50% of the old dock as a water feature complimenting the new structure. The old Arts Guild in Campbell Street has long outlived its purpose especially with The Disability Discrimination Act. Considering that the original building was an old swimming baths build in the 1880's it has done remarkably well. It was converted to its current use in 1946 with the layout of the main auditorium being dictated by the slope of the original pool. In 2004 it was realised that something had to be done to update the Guild. Various option were considered but the most cost effective at that time was a redevelopment on the existing site.
