District Governor Andy Slater visits the Club
Thu, Sep 17th 2009 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am
District Governor Andy Slater was our guest at the Club this evening and he reminded us of Rotary International President John Kenny's message that "It is our daily actions, and our daily decisions, that determine the course of Rotary for us all. The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands."
The message has to be turned into action on the four principle project areas of Health, Hunger, Water and Literacy.
District Governor Andy was particularly impressed with the message given by Bill Gates who has a great enthusiasm to beat polio and in this he wants Rotary International as his partner. The challenge is to raise US$200 million (US$95 million has already been raised), to match US$355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting US$555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.
To raise funding all District Governors do not this year have their own projects they are all promoting Polio eradication.
This was an interesting and inspiring talk by our District Governor who gave advice and guidance a on a wide range of Rotary matters.
