Some notes on Jack Lawson
Jack’s lifetime objective was to make a better life for the farming community not only by improving animal genetics but encouraging farmers to make greater use of the knowledge that was already available to raise their standard of living and quality of life.
In 1984 Jack was asked to take over the Directorship of the Scottish Milk Board’s cattle breeding division and he went on to become one of the biggest movers and shakers in the livestock industry. During his time of responsibility AI increased from 20% to 70% in the Scottish dairy herd and yields rose by 70%.
Various accolades have been given to Jack but he was particularly proud in 1986 to be the recipient of the Sir Wm. Young award for outstanding services to cattle breeding and in 2001 made a Fellow of the Royal Agricultural Societies [FRAgS]. This was followed in 2011 by the Scottish farmer award for lifetime achievement in agriculture and was named Champion of Champions.
The other love of Jack’s life is flying both for business and pleasure. A proud holder of a pilot’s licence since 1983 he was well known for landing in Holland or Germany to buy bulls as he was for visiting Islay or Orkney or taking farming friends on an aerial farm tour outing over Ayrshire.
