Today’s speaker was Ingrid Ashton (publicity and fund raising) from the Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society.
Looking after blind people began due to a war. At the end of World War 1 many wounded soldiers were partially sighted or completely blind and help had to be organised locally. They needed support and re-training for work. "As time passed the groups gradually diminished and they amalgamated into larger ones hence our organisation" said Ingrid .
We have 1500 clients and we can visit people in their homes for an assessment. Assistance can be as simple as a white stick to completing benefit claims, dealing with paper work, talking books/newspapers, speaking watches and to applying tactile aids to objects. There is of course support by belonging to a group.
It was a very interesting talk and we appreciate the help for people who lose their sight for example age related macular degeneration.
President Mike presented Ingrid with a cheque for £250.
