Today's speaker was Paul Spence supported by Beth and Victoria. The subject was P.A.U.L. for Brain Recovery.
How did Paul become involved ? He was an innocent bystander and was assaulted in a Cleethorpes pub, fell backwards, hit his head causing a brain haemorrhage. He spent time in intensive care in Hull Hospital and then “faced a long difficult journey to recovery and soon realised that there was a lack of support in the community” and “nothing could have prepared my family for the experience”.
This prompted Paul to create P.A.U.L (Posivitiy, Awareness, Understanding and Love) for brain recovery.
Brain injury can occur as a result of eg accident, tumours, stroke, aneurysm and other causes resulting a wide variety of problems.
The support (and it is wide ranging) includes social activities, health and well being, family support and advocacy. They are based in Hull but want to set up centres in Grimsby and Scunthorpe.
Beth told us that she suffered brain injury as a result of a road traffic accident, spent 4 months in hospital and could not walk, talk or feed herself.
Victoria’s story was different, she had a brain tumour, underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She lost speech and began the long journey to recovery. Both were assisted by the charity.
We wished them every success with his venture and Paul received a donation.
