Lochnagar Crater ,France.
Gary (secretary) and friends have been on a World War 1 battlefield tour and visited Lochnagar Crater at La Boiselle (on the site of the Battle of the Somme).
History.
A mine had been dug under the German Trench packed with explosives and was to be detonated on the morning of the attack, (July 1st 1916). Unfortunately it was a few yards short but nevertheless it left a huge crater.Years passed and the French wanted to fill it in but the land was bought by an Englishman and so was able to preserve the crater.
A former member of the Club, Murdo Maciness was successful in fund raising for a bench to be bought and placed on the lip of the crater where the 'Grimsby Chums’ attacked the German Trench. In 1999 Murdo led a party of Grimsby Rotarians for a service to dedicate the bench and it has a plaque commemorating the Grimsby Chums.
Murdo (and other members) have visited the site on a number of occasions for
July 1st commemoration service,
To clean and paint the bench (the bench is now looked after by another organisation)
11th November service.
The attached photographs record the visits.
