Our guests today were Stephen Ellis (representing Rotary Foundation), David Phillips (District Governor) and Christine Dagwell Thompson (Assistant District Governor).
Stephen had been invited to talk to the club about Rotary Foundation.
This is our Rotary Charity and was founded in 1917 by Rotarian Arch Klumph . It is a not for profit organisation that donates money to good causes in the UK and world wide.
For example, in 1995 Rotary started the campaign to eradicate polio world wide. There were 350,000 cases globally that year and today there are just 9 cases. It has been a very successful, but a long and sustained campaign. It is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who match US dollar for each US dollar raised.
Other areas of focus include, and receive grants of money in the UK and world wide.
Peace and conflict resolution.
Mother and child health
Clean drinking water and sanitation
Disease prevention and treatment
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development,
Locally we had a grant to support (our contribution) to food banks and District
wide, for assistance in Ukraine.
Members of our club are “sustaining members” in that we donate 100 US dollars per person every year.
