Autumn 2019 River Clean

In conjunction with Grimsby in Bloom


World Rivers Day

The date coincided with World Rivers Day and so was particularly appropriate.  This was the final clean that we were to help Grimsby in Bloom with in 2019.

Meeting Place

Six Rotarians met at The Pavilion, Freshney Drive, Duke of York Gardens to collect HiVis vests, rubber gloves and litter pickers.  This time, as seasoned professionals, we were entrusted with more specialist recovery tools, including a grappling iron, long reach net and extended litter picker.

Supermarket Sweep

Our first trophy was an almost new supermarket trolley which Richard and Nigel hauled up using the grappling iron, followed by an equally serviceable bicycle wheel.  The trolley provided much appreciated transport for the collection that followed - mainly plastic drinks bottles, aluminium cans and food packaging interspersed with the odd items of clothing and footwear.  The two footballs that we retrieved were donated to some local children.

A Good Dousing of Rain

Typically when we were at the extreme of our tour, at Boulevard Avenue, the heavens opened and despite none of us having fallen into the river, we all ended up soaked.  However, his didn't dampen our spirits with John being determined to show his skills with the long reach net by the bridge. After sheltering briefly under a leaky-roofed tree we finished our round with a sprint back to the Pavillion.

Time for a Coffee

On return to The Pavillion we were greeted with a cup of coffee and time to dry out in the company of our MP Melanie Onn.  We concluded that this was successful and worthwhile exercise, made all the more interesting by being allowed access to the river banks.

A big thank you to all of the Rotarians who have supported the three events this year and we shall be supporting Grimsby in Bloom again next year.
