Wish Upon a Star

Ruth is the regional fund raiser for the national charity 'Wish upon a Star' of which there are several beneficiaries in the Grimsby area.  The charity was set up by Barbara White in 1990 to grant wishes for children with life-threatening diseases up to age of 17 with the purpose of giving them something tangible to look forward to.  To date some 17500 wishes have been granted.

Disney Land

The Disney resort in Florida is one of the most popular destinations and the charity maintains two villas to give families  a private environment from which to base their special visit hosted by Disney staff.  For those not able to travel so far, EuroDisney Paris provides a similar experience with accomodation in one of the on-site hotels. The cost for each family is of the order GBP7000 or GBP3500 respectively.

Alton Towers and Lapland

CBeebies Land at Alton Towers is an example of another popular choice.  For some really ill children a day long trip to Lapland with sleigh rides, snowmen and a chance to meet Santa generates lots ofphotos and memories of what might well be their last Christmas.  The charity organises special charter flights at a cost of around GBP90,000 per trip.

Magical Memories for the Family

The charity recognises the extent of the emotional and financial hardship that caring for an ill child can present and aims to create some magical memories for the whole family.

Donation

President John presented Ruth with an interim cheque for GBP100 which will be allocated towards helping local children.  Past President Gordon Chapman gave the vote of thanks.
