Senior Port Welfare Officer and Chaplain for the Mission to Seafarers, Jake Pass gave a talk about his organisation which serves Grimsby, Immingham, Hull, River Ouse and the River Trent ports.
Jake explained that 90% of world trade involves shipping and trade for the UK involves 95% of goods being transported by sea. He explained that currently there are 50,000 ships worldwide working across 150 different nations. Over 1.5 million seafarers have been assisted by the many Missions to Seafarers since its launch in 1856. The Mission responds to the needs of seafarers in 200 ports spread over 50 countries.
In our area, the bulk of the work covered by the Mission involves visiting 70 to 80 ships per month offering practical and spiritual support. Actual activities include supplying mobile Sim cards, listening to the seafarers’ worries and problems and advising on welfare issues and their legal rights.
Following a brief question time, Stuart Falconer gave an excellent vote of thanks.
