ROTARY CHARITY GOLF DAY’S £80,000 PURPLE PATCH
A flock of purple shirted golfers and helpers descended on Kenwick Park on 21 July as The Rotary Club of Grimsby held its thirteenth Charity Golf Tournament and took the total raised by its annual Golf day through the £80,000 barrier.
A warm and sunny afternoon saw 120 golfers participate. Thirty teams of 4 - including groups from Lexus Hull, ABP, Specsavers, Wilkin Chapman and Howarth Timber - competed for prizes and raised in excess of £7,000 through sponsorship and a raffle.
The course, in excellent condition, saw a high standard of golf from many of the competitors and several high scores were posted. In the afternoon heat the teams gratefully received much needed light refreshments at the halfway house and Pimms flowed freely in the balmy conditions.
At the end of play a meal was enjoyed by all in the clubhouse, and prizes were awarded by Mike Quickfall, President of the Rotary Club of Grimsby, who was one of many sporting a Purple4Polio polo shirt to raise awareness of Rotary’s final push to eradicate polio worldwide.
President Mike thanked the major sponsors including Lexus Hull and Associated British Ports who have supported the event from the start, as well as all the other sponsors many of whom have given support year after year. He handed over a substantial cheque to Howard Greenwood of St Andrews Hospice and Andy’s Childrens Hospice - the President's nominated charity for special support in 2016/17.
Steve Kelly, Director at Lexus Hull, captaining his own team said: “It was a great day, although the back nine for me were very challenging. We are proud to have been associated with this event from its beginnings 13 years ago, and with the Rotary Club of Grimsby, which has done so much good for so many local causes over the years. It’s a plus for my team that each year we come there are more Lexus cars in the car park than the year before.”
Funds from the previous events have been distributed to local charities including Grimsby & Cleethorpes Sea Cadets, the Linkage Community Trust Pink Rose Appeal (Lincolnshire’s Learning Disability charity), and national charities for local use such MacMillan Nurses, NSPCC and Motor Neurone Disease.
