26.03.15 RAY CARTER GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES Y YACHT CLUB
Today's speaker was Ray Carter from the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Yacht Cub that is based near the Alexandra Dock .He was at home in the club because there are a number of past and present sailors .
Ray has had a life long passion for boating and started sailing dinghies in Covenham Reservoir before moving onto yachts. He has pent 40 years of sailing with his own boat not only in the UK but also in the Greek islands.
Originally there was a Cleethorpes Yacht Club and one in Grimsby but they merged sometime during the 80's.The benefit was that there was all year round sailing in the Alexandra Dock.Whereas at Cleethorpes they set off from the beach out and onto the Humber.
There are two types of sailors, the ones who enjoy racing and cruising and those who prefer home waters.Ray told us that we have produced some notable sailors who have competed at a national level.
Unfortunately membership is declining and they are trying to encourage people by having a free taster they have a go at sailing ,use their dinghies and kit and hopefully join the club.
Nowadays they share facilities with the sea Cadets and this includes boats as well as kit.
What attracts people to sailing? Either you get it or you don't. So come and have a go!
