Walking Weekend at Gisborough

Several Rotarians and partners arrived at Gisborough Hall on Saturday and had a great start to the weekend by dining in what was the original Billiard Room, having a virtual "Downton Abbey" experience. All that was needed to capture the atmosphere was for Lord Birrell to have stood up and announced the commencement of WW1.

Sunday saw the start of the weekends activities with Rotarians setting off on walks or visiting local places of interest. As the weather was a little chilly, all were ready for a nice meal and a glass of wine (or two!). President Ian welcomed the group to Gisborough Hall and Roger organised the troops for the next day's walking, the most memorable reference point being the red painted gentlemans' pissoir (see photo!!).

All were up bright and early on Monday, batteries recharged and ready to go following an excellent breakfast. The circular walk commenced in Great Ayton where President Ian pointed out the local Pie Shop and Ice Cream Parlour just in case additional sustenance was required! The weather turned into a beautiful spring day and layers of clothing were shed. John Clark, in traditional form, identified  points of geological interest and provided a good insight into volcanic explosions. When we reached Roseberry Topping we split into two groups, one walking around and the other going "over the top", with both having the same objective of reaching the Kings Head on the other side! It was quite a climb for the "over the toppers", but the views were well worth it. However the time taken did not meet the local race event record of 4 minute 20seconds up and down!! Lunch was excellent and refreshment most welcome before commencing the return journey. The overall walk was 6.8 miles and for those who went "over the top", and the altitude gain was 1700ft.

Ann Turner chose the grounds at Gisborough Hall as the subject for her painting. She produced some stunning watercolours which she shared with us in the evening.

Before dinner we were visited by members of the Gisborough Rotary Club who presented a banner to President Ian. The meal was again excellent and President Ian took the opportunity to explain how he knew of Gisborough and the surrounding area and also to thank Roger and Sue Cropp for their efforts in organising a very successful event.
