Lunch Meeting - Mollie & Stephen Brown - Mission in Cambodia

Wed, May 20th 2015 at 12:00 am -

Today we had the pleasure of listening to two remarkable young people, Molly and Stephen Brown (Mollie being the daughter of Rob Barton), who have recently returned from a mission in Cambodia. Working with the Christian charity “Iris Cambodia”, they were involved in programmes focused on the elimination of child sex slavery and exploitation which is rife in the country.

Over a third of the country’s population survive on less than $1 a day and families have no choice but to send their children to work instead of going to school, as beggars, quarry workers, can collectors, and anything that will make a little money, often for as little as 25 cents per day.  Frequently, these children fall prey to child traffickers and sadly it is not that uncommon for children to be sold into the sex trade for a few dollars when their family can no longer feed or support them.

The website for Iris Cambodia can be found at http://www.iriscambodia.org/ where support and donations can be given.

Som Roy thanked Mollie and Stephen, and in Som’s words, fully supported by the Rotarians present, said that they were “two very special people”.
