A report of a visit by Jack Cosgrove, competition winner organised by the Hoddesdon Rotary Club
JACK COSGROVE COMPETITION WINNER. HODDESDON ROTARY CLUB.
When Rtn Derek Young invited me to join him on Sunday 6th April in showing a small group of people round the Grimsby Fish Docks and the visiting group included an 11 year old boy, I immediately thought I had better things to do,but subsequently changed my mind on meeting 11 year old Jack Cosgrove,his father Andrew and Rtn John Glover of the Hoddesdon Rotary Club.All three were delightful people and most grateful for our spending time with them to show them our Fish market,Fishing Heritage Centre and the mid water trawler Ross Tiger.
Young Jack won a Hoddesdon Rotary Essay competition about what we wanted to do with his life,which was to become a deep sea fisherman, but being brought up in an inland town had nor prepared him or his father for the shock of entering Grimsby fish docks .I think their perceptions might have been perhaps that of a visiting a small romantic fishing port on the south coast ,instead they appeared to be somewhat over awed by the sad view of the Grimsby Ice Factory and dilapidated area of the surrounding dock.
