On the day Robin Mason visited the club the lunchtime speaker was Claire (Administrator) from Abbeyfields.
Claire has been working at Abbeyfields for 18 months. She explained that the organisation was started by an ex army major in the 50's with the idea of creating a home for people seeking independant living .(as one would say for gentle folk). The name is derived from the name of a road where the first house was located. It has since grown and now has 8.500 residences and 10,00 volunteers(a number of members from the club are volunteers).
The house has 7 single rooms and one double.Residents (can) eat together except for breakfast. The housekeeper keeps an eye on residents eg health and any other problems.
There is a house committee for the residenrce with management below. They have started new ventures including Sunday lunch, cleaning and a laundry service.
