Burns Celebration delivered in rhyme!

Diners raised the roof with laughter on Friday when The Banff Rotary Club Burns Supper was held at the Banff Springs Hotel.  Nearly 100 guests from far and wide donned their tartan glad rags for this increasingly popular event.

Chairman and Rotarian James Millar surprised and delighted guests as he directed the events of the evening entirely in verse of his own writing.  It was both poignant and hilarious in equal measure and set the tone for what was a great evening.

The inimitable James Brown delivered “The Immortal Memory” which had everyone reeling with laughter.  The ovation that followed truly reflected his imaginative and beautifully crafted oratory.

Ian Moir made the Toast to the Lasses, immediately acknowledging that he had a very hard act to follow.  But he delivered a lively address which maintained the terrific atmosphere of the night.

Next up was Russell Taylor who delivered Holy Willie’s Prayer in theatrical and passionate style – the donning of an ancient night-cap adding even greater authenticity to his oration.

And the final speaker of the evening, giving the Reply from the Lasses was the much-loved Debbie Leslie, the Inverurie based author who responded with great wit and passion.

Banff Rotary Club President, Jan Emery, had just one complaint “My sides were aching with laughter at one point – we all had a terrific evening along with family members, friends, guests  and supporters.  It’s always great to feel that kind of atmosphere, especially at the end of January when we’re all a bit fed up of the grey winter skies”. She added “All profits raised this evening will go to the British Heart Foundation.  And we must acknowledge the generous support of a number of sponsors, including Macsween (Edinburgh), Farmlay (Strichen), Maxwell Farms (Turriff), Hamlyns (Banff), Duncan Farms (Turriff), Benzies (Turriff), Brown Bros. (Kirkconnel) and Whitelink Seafoods (Fraserburgh)”.

As is essential for any great Burns Celebration, singer Moira Stewart, sang acapella, and accordionist Alastair Salter provided the perfect, traditional touch to the evening.
