Rotarians having fun - Archie Gentles Golf 2026

Tue, Sep 8th 2026 at 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

A golf competition in memory of a past member who did so much for this Club.

The Annual Archie Gentles Golf competition

This took place on Tuesday September 8th at the Burton Golf Club

There were 2 golfers who played 18 holes and 4 golfers who played 9 holes. The winner of the18 holes was Mike Styne, and for 9 holes Andy Archer.

The event was organised by Mel Thomas who presented the prizes. Thanks are due to him and Burton Golf Club for providing the venue and the dinner.

Mel Thomas comments:

The first year the Archie Gentles golf competition was played was in 1985 so it has now been going for over 40 years  although due to Covid it was not played in 2019 nor 2020, the competition has always been played at Burton Golf Club.

This year the Archie Gentles trophy was won by Mel Thomas with 35 points with Mike Styne second.

In 2024 a "Dean Thomas” shield was introduced for players who only want to play 9 holes, this is competed for on the same day as the Archie Gentles competition. This year, mainly due to moving the day of the competition from June to September due to the very hot weather in June, only 4 competed for the shield which was won again by Andy Archer, with 13 points, with Graham Dean second.

Nobody won the nearest the pin on hole 2 nor nearest the pin on hole 18 after 2 shots so the bottles of wine donated by the President and the IPP were returned.
