Wildlife in the Home

Speaker report by Phil Willey

Wildlife in the Home

Nigel Slater of the Nottingham Wildlife Trust presented his talk ‘Wildlife in the home’ which he illustrated with many superb pictures.  Although there were some ‘creepy crawlies’ his deep knowledge led him to explain that some, such as maggots, worms and wasps, actually benefit us by preying on even less desirable creatures.  Grey squirrels are definitely undesirable when they get into lofts and chew the insulation on electrical cables.  Foxes are comparatively harmless and even moles help us by reducing numbers of earth worms.  Nigel showed us some wonderful pictures, many taken in Attenborough Nature Reserve, of the resident and migrating bird life, fish and other water creatures which we usually do not see close-up or know little about.
