Every year the Rotary Club of Westbury, in cooperation with the Avon Valley Running Club holds the Imber Ultra Marathon. It is usually held on the first Sunday of March.
The Imber Ultra is a 33-mile race which starts and finishes at the Leighton Recreation Centre in Westbury.
There is a mass start at 9 o’clock presided over by the Town Crier, this is often preceded by small speeches by AVR and the club President.
The course proceeds to the outskirts of Warminster, Chitterne and Tilshead before returning to the northern edge of Salisbury Plain where it follows the range road before returning to the Leighton Recreation Centre.
We have run the course in a clockwise direction but not to everyone’s pleasure.
The course is usually over tracks but be can be hard going if the weather is inclement, which given the area, it often is. It is an anomaly of the course that whatever direction you run, you’re always in a headwind!
The race attracts runners from far and wide with some coming from Cornwall just for the day. We usually attract 150 runners.
We are sponsored by Myddleton & Major Chartered Accountants from Salisbury and the Islington Ford dealership in Westbury/Trowbridge.
