The Month That Was That Was June 24

June was the last month with President Angela in the chair and still the heart and soul of the club.

Club Assembly 17/06

Assistant District Governor Ian Huxham joined us for this year’s Assembly. Ian has worked hard helping Sharon and team get the RotaKids club in Wells off the ground.

The meeting allowed Adrian and Mike as incoming joint Presidents, to set out their thinking on plans and objectives for the year; also for Ian to indicate the wider aims and objectives of District, how we can play our part in helping to achieve these, and hopefully how District can help us.

Key points were:

·        Continuity, engagement and fun are at the heart of the thinking. Sticking to the same pattern of 2 meetings a month rotating between the Crown and the Museum.

·        Gathering for business meetings at 17.30 for an 18.00 start with the option of decamping to the Crown at circa 19.30 for a bite to eat, for those that want it. In addition to dealing with the routine business of the club, these meetings will be used to engage with some of the outside bodies we are supporting or looking to support.

Glastonbury 24

Led by John Boucher a team of volunteers helped once again with stewarding at Glastonbury. The weather was almost perfect: dry, mostly sunny but not too hot; and of course, when not on duty the stewards were able to explore the site and enjoy the music. Coldplay lived up to their headline billing, but a fair few of the team also explored memory lane with Lulu. Well done all, and meet again next year.

Boules 24

Held as is now the norm in the Bishop’s Palace gardens the club's annual boules tournament saw 11 teams compete for the prestigious trophy duly won by one of our regular competitors, “Boules Out for Summer”. Unlike last year we were blessed with a dry, albeit chilly day for late June, and the Panama Jazz band kept all in good spirits. Best of all, the schedule of games finished well within time allowing those that needed plenty of time to get home to watch the big match. The number of teams entering was way down, though, due to the clash of dates with Glastonbury.

Handover 01/07

Tipping over into July, we held the formal handover meeting at The Crown with the new Mayor of Wells, Jasmine Browne, as our guest speaker. As her penultimate act while President, Angela inducted two new members into the club: Dave Lewsey and Jill Edmonds, who were warmly welcomed into the fold by members.

Following their ‘chaining up’ Mike and Adrian once again congratulated Angela on having, through her energy and enthusiasm, put the club right at the heart of community service in Wells. As a small token of everybody’s appreciation for her efforts Pavla presented Angela with a bouquet of flowers.

Mayor Jasmine then addressed the club on her plans for the next 12 months as Mayor: they centre on supporting youth and in particular the local Scout movement, who have a real and urgent need to refurbish the hut they operate from. Her commitment to supporting youth in Wells through service is so close to the heart of Rotary that we concluded there must be plenty of scope over the coming months for us to work closely with her office, supporting one another’s programme. Several members observed that the real-life skills young people gain from being a member of Scouts will serve them throughout life.

Held as is now the norm in the Bishop’s Palace gardens the club's annual boules tournament
