There are about 37 trillion (37,000,000,000,000) human cells in your body varying from bone cells to blood cells, nerve cells to muscles and 190 other different types. But there are just as many foreign animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and other microbes living in us and on us all the time; so, if someone calls you only half human they are spot on!
In his talk “The good, the bad and the smelly” Dr Gihan Ratnayake will explain that research he’s been undertaking shows that keeping your microscopic refugees in good order is vital to a range of health issues. While the research was mainly aimed at seeking the causes of cancer and possible cures, the findings revealed that connections between the balance of the microbes has a significant bearing on numerous other health conditions including such widely ranging things as fertility and mental health.
