At SCCC, 39 Club Members were present plus four
other Rotarians - Peter Renshaw from mother club, Dennis Stephens District
Governor Elect from Yeovil Club, Derek Pheonix from Crewkerne Club, and Tony
Tucker from Kloof Club.
Alison introduced the Speaker Peter Renshaw whose topic was Viridor Credits.
He gave the Club an introduction to the funding of landfill sites in Somerset.
The Landfill Community Fund is generated by a levy on every ton of waste added
to landfill. These funds are administered by Viridor Credits for a wide range
of community charity projects. Peter illustrated some that have received
funding ranging from Cranes on the Levels, Beavers and Heavy Horses up to
Exeter Cathedral and the Tower of London. Recipient projects have to be within
a ten-mile radius of a landfill. He provided a real insight into a subject that
few of us knew about. Look out for the blue Viridor Plaques on activities they
have funded.
Club Business: Paul updated us on the move to new premises by the Halcon
Project team. Nigel gave a very moving mini-presentation on the 'Making a
difference Project'. This has been running for six years and has helped 72
young adults into work, including six who have been supported by our Club.
Nigel outlined a request from two young people for funds to start up small
businesses - Gardening and Nail Technology - and members present warmly
approved these requests. (The money comes from a ring-fenced bequest which was
gifted for this purpose some years ago.)
