Taunton Rotary was pleased to support Jason Snailham with his proposal for the development of Fire Fighting capacity in Nepal. Jason an ex fireman and local Taunton resident had been visiting Nepal when he realised that the infrastructure, inter-agency working and skills and knowledge, could be so much improved. After contacting a Rotary Club in Nepal Jason alongside his ex-colleague Bob Birtles and with the support of the Ghurka Welfare Trust started to work with his Kathmandu Rotarian contact, Nugal to establish a training programme which brought different services together to consider ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Equipment needed up-dating and with the help of the Club's donation, new equipment was sourced and sent. Following visits to various fire stations, Jason and his colleagues organised and ran workshops for 61 people which included firefighters, police, road traffic officers and other emergency service staff from from across the region. The course covered the seven stages of Road Traffic Collision (RTC) including, scene safety, identifying hazards and after care. Fundamentally the aim was to develop knowledge and realise the greater possibilities when services work together.
Jason returns to Nepal in March for ten days of further training of Nepalese firefighters. This is Stage Two of our project. He will be based in two locations and hopes to be accompanied by a British paramedic.
