The Rotary Club of Bridport recently held the opening round of 'Youth Speaks a Debate' in the Bridport Town Hall, a suitably august venue for the students to display their debating skills.
The competition is held throughout the country and involves a number of layers of increasing competition from other schools culminating in a national final. Previous teams from the Sir John Colfox Academy have reached the southern region final and one went all the way to the national final to finish as runners up.
Teams from Sunninghill Prep school in Dorchester and the Sir John Colfox Academy debated topics such as 'The ethicality of space travel', 'Game Bird shooting' and 'Space exploration is irresponsible'.
The senior team from Colfox comprising Poppy Sweet, Iris Mold and Elisa Groves and the intermediate team from Sunninghill comprising Rosa Constant, Lottie Allison and Louis Norton will now progress to the District final which will be held in the Taunton School on Saturday 28th February.
We wish them every success.
