A Talk by Hannah Bird from the Dorset Police Cyber Crime Unit

We were delighted to welcome Hannah Bird from the Dorset Police Cyber Crime Unit who gave an informative and enthusiastic talk on Cyber Awareness and the steps to protect users online.

Our members, their partners and guests, ladies from the Bridport Inner Wheel and Rtn Manolo Delgado from the Rotary Club of Gloucester, who was on holiday nearby, were given straightforward tips and advice to enhance safety and security. We learnt:-

DO NOT use the same, or similar, passwords - use unique passwords and use a password manager such as keeping a paper copy of them.

Whenever possible use two-step-verification.

Keep devices updated and back-up any data or information you would not wish to lose.

Be careful with QR codes. In car parks, for example, the correct codes have been overlaid by fraudulent ones so that payments go to the criminals..... and the motorist receives a parking fine!!

Beware of threatening calls setting deadlines - the intention is to create pressure and hurry the victim into being careless.

If a message appears to be from your bank check by contacting your bank by dialling 159.
