Twenty students from Keswick School across 3 different age categories recently competed for the title of Young Musician of the Year.
In year 7/8, 1st place was awarded to James Glover on piano, playing Masquerade by Karen Tanaka. 2nd place went to Anna Bray, who sang the Owls by Peter Jenkins. 3rd place was Olivia Marsden who sang All of Me by John Legend
In year 9/10, 1st place was won by Rosalind Weir, playing Valse Lente on piano, 2nd place went to John Hopley, also on piano playing Cavatina and 3rd place awarded to Bella Stamper playing the Cossack’s Dance on violin.
In year 11 to13, the winner was Michael Huit, who sang Black is the Colour of my True Love’s Hair, without musical accompaniment – truly amazing voice. 2nd was Alex Tsoi who performed a superb Mariage d’Amour on piano. 3rd was Leah Montgomery playing Invitation to the Dance on violin
The judges had a really difficult evening selecting the winners and they then had to select the best overall vocal performance and the best overall instrumental performance. These went to Michael Huit and Alex Tsoi.
The evening was sponsored by Keswick Rotary Club, and Paul Bowmer on behalf of the club thanked the school, competitors and the judges for putting on a great night of music, which was a real credit to the school. The next step for the selected winners will be the Rotary District Finals at the Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale on February 4th.
