Yesterday evening Carnforth Rotarians were spellbound by the talk on stuttering, which affects 8% of the population with males being more likely to suffer than females.
Paul Palluch began by telling us a story of a young boy, Peter, whose life was a real struggle, completely controlled by his stuttering. This was only approximately 10% of the problem, the other 90% was hidden deep inside him, the frustration, shame and fear of letting himself and everyone else down.
He had tried many ways to overcome his stutter, including speech therapy and hypnotism, which sadly did not work. He became a master at avoidance strategies, until one day he saw a singer, who couldn't say his name, but could sing perfectly formed words with no sign of a stutter. This transformed Peter's life. He signed up for the McGuire Programme which is a 4 day intensive programme, teaching breathing, facing up to stuttering and overcoming fears. He is now a coach who has travelled all over the world helping others.
Yes, you've probably guessed that the boy Peter, was actually Paul.
An amazing life story, which can give hope to all, no age restrictions as one 70yr old has been on the programme.
