Nasty Elements and Compounds
Carnforth Rotarian, Ken McGrath, gave an excellent, informative talk about various elements and compounds and their risk to humans.
He showed us the original Periodic table, then a simple one with pictures, words and colour coded from relative safety to extremely harmful.
Ken then went into more detail with examples, such as Scheele’s Green pigment used in very old wallpaper, which when damp gave off Arsine gas. This, on inhalation, caused multiple organ failure and ultimately, death.
Lead was used in 16th Century cosmetics, also deadly. Mercury, another deadly substance, Radium which is found in rocks and soils can also have adverse effects on health. This was used as a “Glow in the Dark” paint and artists, who often licked brushes for a finer point, suffered from mouth and bone cancers.
Thallium, an old time rat and ant killer became a favourite poison, used by women in Australia, on their abusive partners.
Finally, Ken gave us a warning about carefully reading the labels on current household cleaners, which are not as innocent as perhaps we think.
