Carnforth Cricket Club

Rev. Stephen Jones

The Reverend Stephen Jones entertained members on Thursday evening, with an abundance of information on Carnforth Cricket Club which began life in 1867. Lodge Ground (its home) was finally bought in 1940 for £420.

The Cricket Club had a fascinating history, playing in several different leagues, including the North Lancs, which, in the beginning, mainly covered Cumbria, the Westmorland Cricket League and finally the Northern  Premier League, Division 2.

During their time they had between two and three teams, with many professional players, including players from Australia, the West Indies and South Africa.

The club continues to go from strength to strength, developing women's and girls' teams which now play in League games. They have annual Primary School Cricket matches, Disability Cricket, All Stars for 5 to 8 year olds, Under 11's, Under 13's and Under 16's.

The club is a community asset, well used for a variety of events and by several local groups. The facilities have been improved to include Net facilities, helped by local businesses, people and groups.

It hosts Lancashire Age group teams and is regarded as the preferred ground, due to the excellent upkeep by groundsman Peter Robinson.

The running of the club is helped tremendously by volunteers and as always, more are needed. If you are interested, go along and see what you can do.
