My time in early Carnforth

Doug Taylor

Doug Taylor, one of our own members was the speaker at our meeting on Thursday, 16th January. Doug's talk was enttited " Old Carnforth and Me". Doug spoke about the derivation of the modern day name for Carnforth. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as Cherneford, then in 1212 as Carneford and in 1301 as Kerneford. It is believed all the names relate to the ford over the River Keer. Over many years, Carnforth has grown from a small village. In the 19th Century it was changed into a prosperous industrial town with a railway, coke ovens and iron works. Now Carnforth has become a market town with international fame, being associated with the film "Brief Encounter".

Doug's father was a farm worker. They lived in a number of properties in the town including 12 North Road, one of the oldest  houses in Carnforth, built in 1688. Just before his 14th birthday Doug left Cobb's school and was indentured as apprentice joiner. On completion of a 7 year apprenticeship Doug joined a local firm of  Joiners and Undertakers. This was the beginning of a long career.
Doug had many pictures of Old Carnforth mainly from the late 1800s including  Carnforth Fire Brigade, Football Team and Brass Band. It was in Brass bands that Doug's love of music developed and he played cornet, trombone and euphonium.
Our members applauded Doug for his achievements and his telling, with much humour, his involvement in the joinery and funeral business.
