Friends of the Platform

David Morgan and Sue Saunders

On Thursday,14th November we were were joined by David Morgan and Sue Saunders, chairman and secretary respectively of the Friends of the Platform. David spoke about the history of the building, which was built as a railway station, by the Midland Ralway Company in 1907.  The Platform in Morecambe is a Grade 2 listed building. The station was closed in 1994 and was opened as an entertainment venue in 1997. Due to lack of funding Lancaster City Council [LCC] took the decision in March 2023 to close the venue in 2024. Sue regularly attended events at the Platform and was so concerned that this venue would be lost, she set up a petition to have the decision deferred and reviewed for a reversal by the  LCC councillors. The petition raised 1600 signatures and combined with a previous petition added 8000 signatures. The LCC agreed that Sue could put her case to a full council meeting. This meeting agreed to reverse the closure decision. The  Council recommended a Friends of the Platform Support Group be formed. The Friends was formed in May 2024 and there are plans to grow the membership through a Loyalty and Reward offer.
The Friends are actively seeking grant funding to improve the seating and lighting arrangements in the Platfoirm. They want to raise the awareness of the Platform facilities and events by improving the signage. In anticipation of the Eden Project those visitors will be able to see what is on offer at the Platform.

Our members were pleased to hear of the plans and learn about the membership benefits and opportunities.
