Chris Englefield, the membership manager of the Lancaster Men's Hub, explained that it is a local charity set up to support physical health and wellbeing. Their goal is summed up as "wellbeing through doing". Chris's role is to promote membership to increase from their current 60 members including 6 female members drawn from Lancaster and district. There is a wide age range represented from 29 to 93 years and include people in employment, unemployed, ex service personnel and refugees. The Hub is modelled on the "Shed Movement" which started in Australia and has spread around the world. The purpose is to improve the wellbeing of individuals, ease the effects of isolation and loneliness by offering social and practical activities.
Some members with woodworking skills have used a borrowed workshop and made window boxes, bird, bat and owl boxes for sale to raise funds. The Hub are currently trying to obtain premises where members can meet and carry out craft work.
Our members were given an open invitation to join the Elevenses meeting held on a Friday at the Cornerstone, Sulyard Street, Lancaster.
