North West Air Ambulance

Yesterday evening Steve Slater from North West Air Ambulance gave an extremely interesting talk to Carnforth Rotarians.
The air ambulance which started in 1999, covers all the Northwest which has 8 million people over 5,500 square miles. To date, it has saved over 40,000 lives.
The helicopters only attend trauma cases but rely entirely on sponsorship and donations to cover all costs, which are between £18 to £20,000,000 each year.
The air ambulance carries a highly trained crew consisting of a pilot, two paramedics or a doctor and a paramedic with room for one patient on board. They also have an enormous amount of expensive equipment to take with them, including Lucas which is the machine that carries out automatic CPR. All uniforms are fitted to the individuals, the helmet alone costing over £1,000.
The crew can carry out lots of different emergency operations including putting people into medical comas, open heart surgery and many more procedures to save lives.
There are now 3 helicopters and in 2018, 3 cars were added to the fleet to support other emergencies, especially if the helicopters could not fly for example at night or in bad weather.
