Glen, an electrical engineer and Maggie in the hospitality industry, purchased the hotel ten years ago from Mitchell’s Brewery, with a view to spending a couple of years renovating, so that it could provide overnight accommodation in support of support their other businesses.
Glen presented photographs going back to the 1880’s when the hotel provided local accommodation for railway travellers and interestingly had an entrance on the hotel corner. This was moved to the current Market Street position in the 1940’s and a canopy added later.
The two years turned into ten owing mostly to a very leaky roof and collapsed ceilings.
It is reported that the earlier solution to water leaks, was to provide staff with bucket.s
Storm Desmond created problems with flooding and in particular loss of electricity supplies meant that pumped toilet waste was not pumped away. Covid then provided opportunities for the business to sell “take away” food and real ale at the door, although a downturn in business generally.
The situation today is that all bedrooms are to a high standard, there are disabled facilities and both pedestrian and kitchen lifts to the rooftop restaurant lifts from the new kitchen. The new Kitchen incidentally is in the garage where the Rotary Santa’s Sleigh spent its off-duty time.
Outside, the Carnforth Rotary plaque is by the front door and round the corner, the courtyard is ready to take market stalls for special events.
Those travelling from afar to attend safety training courses at XI Construction Industry Safety Training and LARs Communications have good accommodation; as do cyclists on journeys such as John O’Groats to Land’s End. Hotel profits are just less than break even, but all of the initial objectives have been achieved.
A vote of thanks for a most interesting an informative talk was given by Rotarian Andrew Kitchen.
