Blackpool Palatine Rotary recently welcomed Jane Hugo, Chief Executive of Streetlife, who gave us a very informative & thought provoking talk about the charity.

Streetlife is a registered charity, helping vulnerable young people, was established in Blackpool in 1984, with the Nightshelter opening in 1992. When this night shelter was opened they had no idea it would still be needed 30 years later.
Streetlife receives over 300 requests for help every year from young people aged 16-25, who are either homeless, at risk, or have experienced homelessness. This night shelter has eight beds which have a 75% occupancy over a twelve month period. It may only be small but it provides huge support & meets demand.
They also provide a wide range of support available at their day centre including counselling, lifeskills training, information, advice, coaching & signposting. Other activities that help young people build on their self-esteem are a big part of Streetlife's work. They run a Duke of Edinburgh programme alongside lots of other meaningful activities including music, art, creative writing & poetry workshops.
Streetlife was established by the local churches & is run by qualified youth workers. The charity believes in putting young people at the centre of everything they do. It operates in a non- judgemental & empowering way to ensure that young people feel valued, safe & able to make informed decisions about their lives.
The team consists of 10 paid staff & approximately 35 volunteers. Every year, overseas volunteers arrive at Streetlife to undertake a 10 -12 month placement. Streetlife provides accommodation for up to six of these volunteers at any time, paying their bills & providing £77 a week expenses. The volunteers work full-time gaining valuable experience & go o to do greater things.
Streetlife receives funding from various charitable trusts including Comic Relief & the Big Lottery but they also organise an annual fundraising event, The Big Sleepout, where in excess of 100 people sleepout in St.Johns Square, Blackpool, which raises between £5,000-£47,000 at each event. They also organise a £5 Campaign whereby people sign up to donate £5 a month to help support the charity.
