Alf Hadley might not be the tallest man in the club but he certainly took on the challenge of being club president in 2013-14, and now he's doing it again three years later!

In fact in his rugby playing days he tackled the best in the game, coming up against the likes of rugby league legends Billy Boston, Alex Murphy, Alan Prescott and Vince Karalius.

Born in Barrow, he played for the England Under-17 team in an international against France but it was Whitehaven RL who temped him into the professional game, Alf signing for them the same day as forwards Dick Huddart and John Temby who both went on to gain international honours.

Alf was a joiner by trade but when he moved to Whitehaven to play he also worked for the Coal Board and spent some time down the mines.

On his return to Barrow at the end of his pro playing days he hit the heights, working with a steeplejack on the Barrow Steelworks chimneys.

Rotary is only one of his many activities.

He was chairman of the Barrow Male Voice Choir for 23 years, leading a recruitment drive that took the membership from only 16 to now over 50 choir members. And when he said he was standing down as club chairman, they introduced a new appointment for him as vice-chairman.

Alf is on the board of the Barrow and District Disability Association and that of the Blind Society. He is also chairman of the very active Abbotsvale Community Centre.

Being so busy it is little wonder that he says wife Ann has "put up with me" for 35 years.
