“Maggie’s” Cheltenham Gold Cup 2020

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District’s Cheltenham Gold Cup Event raises over £2,600.00




Recently, Friday 13th Mach 2020 The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District hosted their 3rd Annual Cheltenham Gold Cup Event at The Woodland House Hotel, Newbridge, Dumfries, raising a grand total of £2,614.04 to date with more donations coming in, all in aid of “Maggie’s” the inspiration of local woman Maggie Keswick.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the jewel in the crown of the Cheltenham Festival attracting the best horses, jockeys and trainers from the UK and Ireland taking place every year in March. The first ever Gold Cup was run in July 1819, it originally was run on a flat course of three miles, it wasn’t until March 1924 when jumps were introduced into the race on what had then become the ‘Old Course’.

Seventy three race goers dressed for the occasion entering into the spirit and the atmosphere of a day at the races. The afternoon superbly compared by local speaker Mike Smith began at 12.30 with a Prosecco and canapés reception, the live TV coverage of the afternoons races where screened at the event along with a Tote betting system that was in operation. Afternoon Cream tea's were served mid afternoon with Prosecco free flowing during the day.

As well as having a flutter on the Tote race goers could enter into our “Cheltenham Five Race Challenge” for a chance to win a Magnum of Moet Champagne kindly donated by Farries, Kirk and McVean, which after a dead heat point score was won by Rosalind Baker. The raffle draw followed for a chance to win a work of art “Hazy Days of Summer” painted and donated by local artist Ed Slater, which was won by Peter Wray.

President Michael Keene closed the afternoon by thanking Mike Smith for professionally comparing the afternoon, our sponsors for their continued support, the Rotary convenors and members for the organising and running of the event, donators of prize’s and cash donations, one being £400.00 from local businessman Mark Jardine and £100.00 from The Woodlands House Hotel, last but certainly not least all the guests who came along to the races to support our event all in aid of “Maggie’s”

This ever popular event could not have taken place without the continued support from our sponsors, George McCall of The Woodlands House Hotel for allowing us access to their venue and Calum McKay of T N McKay, English Street, Dumfries, for providing the large screen TV’s. Transport to and from the event was supplied by Brownriggs Coach Hire, East Morton Street, Thornhill, which also allowed Rotary to donate the £110.00 collected from the passengers to the charity.
