"Maggie's Cheltenham Gold Cup Day 2019"
The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District once again brought the atmosphere, excitement and drama of Cheltenham’s Gold Cup day to Dumfries and Galloway, all in the aid of charity.
The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District recently hosted it’s second Cheltenham Gold Cup Day, this year it was hosted at The Woodland House Hotel, Newbridge, Dumfries Friday 15th March 2019. Once again the proceeds will go to Maggie’s. “Maggie’s Cheltenham Gold Cup Day” was the orchestrated last year by Rotarian Alastair Sillars, and again this year Rotarian’s Gordon Lawson, Alastair Sillars along with their team again did themselves proud by organising an exciting and fantastic day.
The Woodland House Hotel’s function room was transformed into a racegoers paradise, the afternoon commenced at 12:30pm with a Prosecco and Canapé reception prior to the first race at 13:30pm, also during the afternoon the guests enjoyed a superb afternoon tea. As last year the racegoers entered into the spirit of the day by dressing up for the occasion and had a wee flutter, whilst watching the races live on giant screens provided courtesy of T N MacKay, Dumfries.
The afternoons raffle was also a huge success were local artist Ed Slater provided an original painting as first prize and the Nithsdale Hotel, Sanquhar providing a voucher to be used at their hotel.
This year sixty plus revellers including Shona and Malcolm Morrison representing Maggie’s, thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the day, Club President Liz Baxter was honoured to announce that during the afternoon they had managed to raise in the excess of £1,700.00 for Maggie’s Centres.
Maggie’s Centres are opening all over the country with many more currently in development. Its work has been praised by leading doctors who recognise the importance of meeting the practical, emotional and social needs of people with cancer, as Maggie Keswick’s local Rotary club we are honoured to be involved with and assist “Maggie’s” as much as we can.
A huge thank you goes out to Mr George McColl and the staff of The Woodland House Hotel who made us so welcome and allowed us full use of their function room, such a fantastic venue.
