The birth of our National Bard Robert Burns was recently celebrated by the Rotary Club of Thornhill and District with a supper held in Thornhill Bowling Club.
Over seventy Rotarians and friends gathered for a most enjoyable evening, with an excellent ‘banket’ prepared and served by bowling club members, followed by a splendid programme of ‘sang and clatter’.
The Immortal Memory of the bard this year was delivered by Moffat-raised Oliver Mundell. In a most informative presentation Oliver described how his love of Burns grew from an early age and how the bard’s work spoke to everyone in good times and in bad.
A very entertaining Toast to the Lassies was provided by award winning Dumfries dairy farmer Colin Mair.
Replying on behalf of the lassies was the inimitable Ella Pennington who entertained all with amusing tales, expertly delivered in her charming Aberdonian accent.
Offering the toast to the Haggis this year was Bobby Jess who later treated the company to an excellent rendition of Tam ‘o’ Shanter.
Musical entertainment was provided by the ever-popular Wallace Hall Academy students Heather O’Connor and Sam Solley, while Willie Prentice once again expertly piped in the Haggis. As has been the case for a long number of years, Rotarian Brian Lord led the company in the ‘Star o’ Rabbie Burns’
Chair for the evening was Rotarian and Thornhill businessman Stewart Lee who expertly kept the evening on track The evening concluded with the vote of thanks from Rotary President Gordon Steele.
