The Thornhill and District Rotary Club recently held its annual International Evening at the Auldgirth Inn. Guests for the evening were three post-graduate students studying at the Dumfries campus of Glasgow University. Each of the students gave a short presentation to the club.
Kirsten Layne from Gastonia in the US state of North Carolina is studying for a Doctorate in the area of climate change and communication. In her time in Dumfries she explained that she had joined The Dumfries Guild of Players, where she was introduced to the whole new world of a Scottish pantomime where 'booing' was a welcome part of the entertainment!
Hugo Santillan from Mexico was studying for a Masters degree researching the interaction between humans and technology. A rugby fan, Hugo now plays for The Dumfries Saints. He explained that one of his proudest achievements to date was learning 'Scotland the Brave'.
Finally Wilma Molina, whose home town was near the Mexican holiday destination of Cancun explained that she was studying for a PhD in tourism. Whilst she was a little unprepared for Dumfries being two hours drive from Glasgow, she was very generous of her praise for the warmth of the welcome from the people of Dumfries. It was her view that the area would be a splendid place to bring up a family.
When asked about their favourite pub in Dumfries, The Globe Inn was a unanimous choice!
The International Night was organised by Rotarian Robin McClelland.
In thanking the student guests, Rotarian Max McKie said 'It was indeed a pleasure to hear from a group of bright young people from overseas who had selected to further their studies in Dumfries'.
