Thornhill Rotarians and friends took a once in a lifetime opportunity ( well for most of us non purchasers anyway) to see around the Bentley Motors factory in Crewe.
The tour gave us the chance to hear about the creation of these iconic motor cars from design, through development to manufacture, much of which is still hand done by some of the most skilful workers in their respective trades.
The works was an immaculate series of locations creating bespoke cars all of which had a buyer even before production began. Besides the actual assembly line which was fascinating in itself, the components areas allowed us to see precision and quality craftsmanship that went into the production of 30 cars a week. Labour inputs varied from some 6 to 20 times that of a normal mass produced car today but it showed in the finished product! Even a steering wheel leather cover took 5.5 hours of hand stitching to complete.
