1st Round of the Rotary Quiz
Past winners Rhyl won’t be lifting this year’s Rotary District 1180 Quiz Trophy after bowing out in a first round defeat at the hands of familiar rivals Colwyn Bay at Faenol Fawr.
Despite being favoured with ‘home’ advantage, the Rhyl quartet of past Presidents Gareth Wynne Jones, Mike Howarth, Mike Parry together with Junior Vice-President Gareth Davies, found themselves trailing in the latter rounds having earlier opened up a promising 7 points lead.
Finding the correct answers increasingly elusive over the testing 12 rounds, Rhyl’s plucky mixed-bag performance left them eight points adrift at the close of the contest as scorer Andrew Brown announced a 54-46 winning margin for the visitors.
Delighted Colwyn Bay team captain Graham Roberts modestly expressed surprise at the turn-around in the two teams’ fortunes and thanked the Rhyl club for both the warmth of their welcome and their sporting performance.
Rhyl captain Gareth Davies responded with congratulations to the victors on their deserved win as well as for providing an evening of excellent fellowship and good fun.
Thanks were also expressed to experienced quiz master Keith Sanderson for his accomplished and good-natured control of the proceedings along with best wishes to the Bay team and their enthusiastic travelling supporters in the subsequent matches in this popular inter-club annual competition.
The next full meeting of the club will be on Tuesday October 10 for which a big attendance is expected for the visit to Faenol Fawr of District Governor Beryl Cotton of the Saughall club.
