Roll out the barrel appeal
An appeal to members to support a 10 mile sponsored barrel roll next month was made by President Mike Parry at the weekly meeting at Faenol Fawr.
Confirming that this charitable event would take place on Saturday February 20, he said it would, entail pushing a barrel from Rhyl to Prestatyn – and back – with proceeds going to support the imaginative campaign by Rotary International to deliver one million barrels of fresh water to Africa and developing countries around the world.
“In many stricken areas in these countries, women and children carry their own weight in water in dirty jerry cans and containers, not just from a local pump a few hundred yards away but sometimes over 6 miles or even further, just to survive,” he explained.
“This can and does cause physical problems, reduce growth and prevent children from having the time to attend school. Now this concerted Rotary Water Barrel venture can provide the instant solution and I urge all members to give it their enthusiastic support and to obtain as many names as possible of people willing to share in sponsorship to secure the success of this mammoth and worthy humanitarian aspiration.”
Earlier members were reminded of the wine tasting evening taking place at Faenol Fawr on Tuesday January 26 to follow the regular evening meal and which promised to be an interesting and popular event.
The evening was completed by a short and topical talk by past President Hari Hughes recalling childhood expeditions to the fringes of Caernarfon harbour where he and young friends from a nearby village would scour the water’s edges collecting attractively-coloured glass floats used as markers for passsing vessels.
To help illustrate his vivid recollections from more than half a century ago, he brought along a perfectly preserved example which remained a treasured possession in his family’s collection.
The warm thanks of the club for this fascinating trip down memory lane was expressed by the President.
