Press Release 11 August 2025
Local MP Claire Hughes recently attended the Llandudno Rotary meeting to talk about her work in parliament.
Rotary is an apolitical organisation, so as requested she did not speak about Labour Party policies.
Instead, she told us about her life in parliament and the constituency, and what a hectic schedule it is. She juggles her work in London with the need to reach out to as many people as she can in the Bangor Aberconwy constituency, with raising a family.
“It’s been a massive change to my life. I ‘ve always felt that our area has been ignored, and the reason I stood for Parliament is that I wanted to stand up and fight our case.”
“The first week was real eye opener because I suddenly realised that people were going to start listening to what I said. As a candidate it was very difficult to get any coverage, but on the first journey down to Westminster the train was late. I tweeted about that and found I was on the front page of the local paper.”
As an MP she makes laws, scrutinises legislation, takes part in debates and asks questions in Parliament. She also helps people from the constituency to resolve many different issues.
She is a member of several groups including the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, comprising MPs from different political parties, to scrutinise issues that particularly affect Wales. Some of the current issues include:
· How to attract more investment into Wales for jobs and prosperity
· Dealing with the legacy of deindustrialisation
· Public transport
· Agriculture
· The hospitality industry
· University funding, which affects our local university in Bangor.
In December she was made a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) for the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). A PPS is appointed to be the assistant to a minister, in this case Jonathan Reynolds, the Secretary of State for DBT. Claire was selected from backbench MPs as his 'eyes and ears in the House of Commons.
Monday to Thursday night she's at Westminster, starting with an early meeting on Monday and can work up to 10 pm. She arrives home about 11 pm Thursday, and then does her constituency work and visits in the next couple of days.
Because the constituency is large, she tries to visit as many different areas as possible. She has an office in Llandudno and is opening one in Bangor but has also held meetings in many of the smaller towns and villages. She’s also held surgeries in local supermarkets and other nontraditional settings to try and connect with as many local people as possible to find out what they need.
“I’m lucky my two children are teenagers, and quite independent. I would never have managed the workload I have now when they were younger.”
Whatever you think about her politics, there is no doubting her energy and commitment to the local area.
