Colin presented the final talk of his "Artic Trilogy". He visited the Iles de la Madeleine to view the pupping of the Harp seals on the frozen sea ice in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Colin and Chris were flown 80 miles by helicopter to the fringe of the pack ice where the baby seals are nursed. They are fed for just 15 days (with 45% butter fat milk) before their mothers desert them prior to their moult. Once they have moulted and their pelts have maximum value the local Quebecois proceed with the hunt. Even though up to 270K of baby seals are culled each year, the population contines to grow and threatens the local fishing industry. A most interesting talk accompanied by some excellent photographs.
